Two Victorian Rail Network Maps dating back to 1899 situated in their own niches at the entrance to Victoria Station have been lovingly restored by the Restore London team. The maps required significant intervention to restore areas of damage and dilapidation to the faience tiles and granite plinths as well as cleaning and conservation of the existing fabric.
Traditional techniques were employed by our Conservators and each tile carefully hand-cleaned to restore the lustre of the maps. Where material replacements were necessary, our team meticulously studied photographs from Historic England archives to ensure the closest possible match was sourced (supplied by Craven Dunnill Jackfield). Extensive sampling and approval processes followed, resulting in a seamless and faithful restoration of these unique pieces of London’s transport and architectural history
