The Old Operating Theatre

Appointed as Specialist Principal Contractor, Restore London undertook refurbishment & restoration works to the Grade II listed Old Operating Theatre. Constructed in 1822, in the garret of St Thomas’ church in Southwark, the operating theatre was used to carry out early operations without anaesthesia in front of a packed gallery of medical students. Our works, in close liaison with Mike Jackson of Jackson BCS, included replacement of the main rooflight situated above the operating space, originally designed to provide light to the working surgeons below, repairs to 5 no. dormer windows, leadwork and RWG replacement, joinery and internal repairs, small rooflight installation and a new commercial blind with associated electrics.  These sympathetic improvement works have provided increased light and air to the area in the hot summer months as well as improved functionality for presentations.
